Can I do SEO myself? What you can handle and where it goes wrong

Yes. Most of what makes up SEO is a set of good habits carried out consistently, and a business owner can do a lot of it without hiring anyone. Here is which parts are realistic to do yourself, where it tends to go wrong, and what you are actually paying for if you bring someone in.

What is SEO, in plain terms?

SEO is getting your website to appear for the words your customers use when they search on Google, or when they ask an AI tool for a recommendation. You are trying to match your site to as many relevant searches as you can, so that people find you and use your services.

Which parts of SEO can I do myself?

More than most agencies will tell you. The biggest single factor is one you already hold: knowledge. Nobody understands your industry, your services and your customers better than you do, and search engines reward websites that cover a subject thoroughly and accurately. That depth is very hard for an outsider to fake.

The practical side is mostly about clarity. Each page should be about one thing, written plainly and in a logical order, with the words your customers would use in the page title and the main heading. Use those words naturally. Repeating a phrase ten times does not help and reads badly.

Then there are the checks anyone can run: page titles, descriptions, heading order, image descriptions and links. None of it needs a developer.

What should I do first?

Two things you can do this week for free:

  • Run an audit. Our free website audit shows where your site stands on Google and in AI search, what is not working and the basics that need fixing.
  • Install the Detailed SEO Extension for Chrome and open it on each of your pages. Note what it says about your title, description, heading structure, word count, image alt text and links. Most of what it flags can be fixed in an hour or so.

Also check that your robots.txt file is not blocking search engines or AI crawlers. It is a small text file that tells them what they may read, and a single wrong line in it can hide a whole website.

Is SEO paid or free?

Appearing in the normal search results costs nothing. You cannot pay Google to rank higher there, and the work itself, from keyword research to building well structured pages, can be done without spending money. What it costs is time and consistency.

When you pay an agency, the fee covers the work and the tools: a full audit of your site, competitor analysis, keyword research, a strategy, technical fixes, content updates and structured data, then keeping all of that going month after month. We use paid tools such as Semrush, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog and DataForSEO to do it properly, which a single business would rarely justify buying on its own.

Where does do-it-yourself SEO go wrong?

The most common mistake is changing too much, too quickly. The point of SEO is to make your website clear to search engines and AI tools. If titles, pages and structure change every week, they never get a settled picture of what you do.

The second is shortcuts. Technical changes made without understanding them, tactics designed to trick search engines, and hundreds of near-identical pages produced in bulk all tend to backfire. So does filling a site with generic AI-written copy, which gives Google nothing to prefer you for.

The third is giving up early. SEO takes longer to show than people expect, especially for competitive searches. What we usually see is a site making small progress for a few months, then all of that work arriving at once as a sharp rise in rankings. Quick wins do happen, but the long-term gains are the ones worth having.

When is it worth getting help?

When you do not have the time to be consistent, when the technical side is beyond what you want to learn, or when you are competing for searches where everyone else already has an agency. If you would rather hand it over, see our SEO services and pricing. If you want to keep doing it yourself, the audit is still the best place to start.
